      ARTIST  STATEMENT

A.S.HELWIG utilizes techniques such as collage, texturing,                    glazing and under painting to explore the prairie landscape.

“I am painting the landscape that is familiar to me,” says                    Helwig.  “The imagery that I have been working with has                    become spiritual and dreamlike.  The images are quick                    glances we have of the landscape as we move through it.”

Themes of alienation, awe, personal epiphanies and                       prayerfulness emerge.  The fleeting moment transcends                       itself to reveal that feeling, that truth, which we intuitively                       understand but find difficult to articulate.  These are visual                       poems, which insinuate the eternal into our understanding                       of the immediate.  Her work is represented by Mountain                       Galleries in Jasper, Banff and Whistler, and Blue Rock                       Gallery in Black Diamond.

BIOGRAPHY

 A. S. Helwig was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.                         From an early age she drew and painted.  In fact, she has painted in acrylics since she was 14 years old in the coulee hills close to her family home.  Helwig took a two year commercial art program at the Medicine Hat College and then a Bachelor of Education Degree (with Distinction) from the University of Lethbridge.  Looking for adventure she moved to Fox Lake, a small remote Indian village in Northern Alberta.  There she taught English and art while maintaining a studio in her home.  Presently residing in Calgary, Helwig remains an art educator, and a studio artist.   You might have seen her acrylic painting show on Shaw TV called Canvas.  She is filming the third season of this show.

Helwig attended the Banff Centre of Arts in a self-directed residency in 2008 and 2005.  Her award winning work in included in many private and corporate collections.

Our next featured artist:   Susanah Windrum - Copper Lizard Studio

My artwork is made in a way that is reminiscent of the prairie ranchers’ method - use what you have at hand to create something needed. Instead of trying to make a new piece of metal look old, I search for and find metal that already holds its own history and story - then join that with other aged pieces to create a new story.

I love the process of visualizing and creating something new, out of discarded objects and materials that once had a completely different purpose.

I work with recycled, post-consumer, and repurposed metal to create jewellery, low–relief sculptures and metal collages. My metal assemblages are constructed using traditional cold–connection jewellery techniques with a variety of different types of rivets. Metal to used to join metal, there is no soldering or welding.

Each Copper Lizard Studio piece is a unique, one-of kind artwork inspired by the way the metal has been transformed by aging, patina and wear.
