Susan Thorpe

I love the feel and earthy scent of clay. It reminds me of under my grandmother’s porch, boxes stacked in the fruit cellar, opening the cottage on the 24th of May, musty from being closed all winter. Clay connects me with my southern Ontario roots.
Clay is a powerful material in other ways. It can be formed to imitate almost any other material. I model and sculpt animal forms with surfaces that look like fur or feathers, real or imagined. My current work is a mix of stoneware clay and paper fiber. I enjoy adding found materials and grouping the animals to create sociological, political or ecological statements.
My sculptures are fired in an electric kiln to approximately 2000F to ensure strength and then completed with finishes that could include patinas, acrylics, stains or glaze.
